Introduction: Bioactive compounds in plants are essential for aquatic animal nutrition because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. They combat oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals and protecting cells from damage. This protection helps to maintain normal physiological functions critical for fish health. Furthermore, these compounds enhance the immune system, increasing fish resistance to pathogens and environmental stressors. Improved immunity reduces disease risk and mortality rates. Bioactive substances also support digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as promoting better growth performance. Collectively, they boost fish resilience and biological functioning, making them valuable for sustainable aquaculture. Given the importance of Stellate sturgeon, Acipenser stellatus, as one of the most commercially valuable fish species in the Caspian Sea, in this research, the effects of different levels of resveratrol antioxidant on blood parameters, serum biochemical indices, and liver enzymes in the juvenile Stellate sturgeon were studied for 8 weeks.
Materials and Methods: To examine the effects of Resveratrol, five dietary treatments with 200, 400, 800, and 1000 mg/kg (R200, R400, R800, and R1000, respectively) were prepared along with a control basal diet without Resveratrol (R0). Ingredients for the basal diet were precisely weighed and mixed, with the Resveratrol added accordingly. Pellets were made by mixing the ingredients, forming dough with water, grinding through a 2 mm pellet, drying at 40 °C for 36 h, and storing at dry and cold place. One hundred and fifty Stellate sturgeon averaging 92 ± 2.5 g were acclimated for two weeks in 15 fiberglass tanks stocked with 10 fish each. After acclimation, tanks were randomly assigned to treatments with three replicates for an 8-week trial. Water quality was maintained with aeration, daily 50% water exchange, and stable temperature (18.54 ± 0.53 °C), oxygen (6.89 ± 0.19 mg/L), and pH (8.09 ± 0.01). At the end, in order to determine the hematological, biochemical parameters, and liver enzymes, blood was taken from the caudal vein using a syringe and poured into a 2-mL microtube. Data were statistically analyzed using One-Way ANOVA, and Tukey’s multiple comparison with significance at P<0.05.
Results: The results showed that at the end of the experiment, the highest hematocrit (42.66 ± 2.42%) was observed in R1000, exhibiting a significant difference compared to the control (R0; P<0.05). The lowest glucose and cholesterol levels were observed in R800 and R1000, exhibiting a significant difference compared to the control (R0; P<0.05). Also, the lowest triglyceride was observed in R1000, exhibiting a significant difference compared to the control (R0; P<0.05). The lowest aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was observed in R1000, exhibiting a significant difference compared to the control (R0; P<0.05).
Discussion and Conclusion: The results showed that Resveratrol can improve the general health status of aquatic animals, but it is very important to determine the effective doses on blood indices, serum biochemical parameters, and liver enzymes. Therefore, in the present study, Resveratrol in nutritional treatments with a dose of 1000 mg/kg diet is recommended for juvenile Stellate sturgeon. Overall, the present results suggest that a diet containing 1000 mg/kg Resveratrol could enhance blood indices, serum biochemical parameters, and liver enzymes in juvenile Stellate sturgeon.

Introduction: Reproductive performance in female sturgeon is governed by a complex interaction of nutritional, hormonal, and environmental factors, with nutrition playing a central role in modulating the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis and supporting gametogenesis. Among nutritional factors, vitamin C, a vital water-soluble micronutrient, significantly contributes to growth and broodstock reproductive functions. However, despite the intrinsic synthesis capability of sturgeons, heightened physiological demands under intensive aquaculture conditions necessitate further investigation into optimal supplementation strategies. Given the importance of aquaculture, this study compared the effects of dietary and injectable vitamin C supplementation on growth performance and oocyte characteristics in sterlet Acipenser ruthenus female broodstock.
Materials and Methods: A total of 36 female broodfish with an average body weight of 812.46 ± 174.96 g were randomly assigned to four treatments including: Control (fed a basal diet without vitamin C and without injection; F−I−), dietary vitamin C supplementation at 1000 mg/kg diet without injection (F+I−), injection of vitamin C at 50 mg/kg body weight while fed the unsupplemented basal diet (F−I+), and combined dietary (1000 mg/kg diet) + injectable (50 mg/kg body weight) vitamin C (F+I+) were evaluated over a 60-day experimental period. Growth indices and egg characteristics, including germinal vesicle (GV) polarization index and egg diameter, were measured at three sampling times: the first stage (before the start at the initiation of the experiment), the second stage (30 days after the start of the experiment), and the third stage (60 days after the start of the experiment). Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA to examine the effects of treatment and time.
Results: No statistically significant differences were observed among the experimental groups (F−I−, F+I−, F−I+, and F+I+) regarding growth indices at any stage (P>0.05). Survival remained 100% in all treatments throughout the study. Regarding oocyte quality, GV index showed no significant interaction between time and treatment (P=0.99) and no significant effect of treatment (P=0.75). Similarly, oocyte diameter increased over time, with the smallest values recorded in phase 1 (P=0.02). No significant treatment effect (P=0.86) or time × treatment interaction (P=0.56) was found for oocyte diameter.
Discussion: The absence of significant growth responses may be attributed to the prioritized allocation of metabolic energy toward vitellogenesis rather than somatic growth during the final stages of maturation. Furthermore, the endogenous ability of sturgeon to synthesize ascorbic acid, coupled with high tissue storage capacity, likely masked the effects of short-term supplementation. The observed changes in GV index and oocyte diameter were consistent with the natural progression of ovarian maturation regulated by the HPG axis, rather than a direct consequence of vitamin C supplementation.
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that growth performance and oocyte characteristics in female sterlet broodstock were unaffected by the applied doses of dietary and injected vitamin C. Instead, changes in these parameters were primarily driven by the progression of time and the natural course of gonadal maturation. Further studies on biochemical indicators, such as antioxidant enzyme activity under stress, are recommended.

Introduction: The aquaculture industry, a fundamental pillar of food security and a means of meeting the ever-growing nutritional demands of human populations, holds a strategic position. However, the sustainable development of this industry faces numerous obstacles, including a wide range of bacterial diseases, such that grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella farms in Iran are currently grappling with complex biological, managerial, and health challenges. In this context, the novel approach of using phytogenic supplements and organic acids as a safe and sustainable alternative to antibiotics, due to the detrimental consequences of indiscriminate antimicrobial use in culture systems, has emerged as a key and increasingly adopted global strategy. Among natural compounds, ginger, Zingiber officinale, owing to its bioactive constituents such as gingerol, shogaol, and zingerone, exhibits remarkable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, malic acid (MA), as an organic acid, can effectively improve digestion and nutrient absorption, particularly under high stocking densities, by reducing gastrointestinal pH and inhibiting pathogenic bacterial populations within the intestinal tract.
Materials and Methods: In the present study, a total of 240 juvenile grass carp with an average initial weight of 4.4 ± 0.01 g were fed for 58 days under a completely randomized design with four dietary treatments. The experimental treatments included T0: control group (without any supplement), T1: diet containing 0.25% MA, T2: diet containing 0.2% ginger, and T3: diet containing a synergistic combination of both supplements (0.25% MA + 0.2% GP). The evaluated parameters comprised growth performance (WG, FCR, SGR, PER, and FE), digestive enzyme activities (protease, lipase and amylase), non-specific immune components (Ig, total IgG and lysozyme activity), and antioxidant defense indices (GPx, SOD and CAT). Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS (v.22) at a 95% confidence level (P<0.05).
Results: Quantitative findings from the measurements demonstrated significant increases in WG, SGR, and PER in all supplemented treatments (T1, T2 and T3) compared to the control group. Concurrently, these treatments led to a marked and significant reduction in FCR (P< 0.05). Moreover, digestive enzyme activities (particularly protease and lipase), Ig levels and lysozyme activity, as well as antioxidant enzyme efficiencies (GPx, SOD and CAT), were significantly elevated in the supplemented groups relative to the control. Among these, the combined treatment (T3) exhibited the most pronounced and statistically significant positive effects across all measured parameters compared to the other treatments.
Discussion: The results of this study clearly indicate the positive and substantial impact of GP and MA supplements, particularly in their synergistic combination, on the physiological and immunological parameters of grass carp. It appears that GP, by stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes such as amylase and protease, facilitates the efficient digestion of carbohydrates and proteins, and through appetite enhancement and improvement of beneficial intestinal microbial populations, lays the groundwork for optimal growth. On the other hand, MA, by lowering intestinal pH, creates an unfavorable environment for pathogenic bacteria and contributes significantly to the balance of gut microflora. While both supplements exhibited relatively similar potency in stimulating antibody secretion and disrupting the membranes of invading bacteria, GP demonstrated superior efficacy in the context of antioxidant defense, particularly in decomposing hydrogen peroxide and scavenging reactive oxygen species. Overall, the synergy of these two nutritional agents (T3), through their concurrent influence on growth, immunity, and antioxidant axes, delivered a performance far beyond their individual applications, thereby strengthening their scientific and practical recommendation.
Conclusion: In general, the present study demonstrated that dietary supplements derived from plant sources and organic acids possess the potential to serve as more sustainable and effective alternatives to conventional antibiotics in aquaculture systems. The synergistic combination of GP and MA, compared to each compound alone, exhibited considerably higher efficacy in improving growth performance indices, enhancing the immune defense system, and boosting antioxidant capacity. Moreover, while promoting overall fish health and mitigating adverse environmental impacts, this combination can be recommended as a practical and effective strategy to improve the productivity of grass carp farming operations in the country.

Introduction: The global aquaculture sector relies heavily on the sustainable expansion of shrimp farming. However, the industry’s long-term sustainability is threatened by its dependence on fishmeal (FM), an increasingly expensive and ecologically limited finite resource capped at an annual global production of approximately five million tons. Rising market prices, combined with climate-driven fluctuations and inter-industry competition, expose shrimp production to significant economic risks. While substituting FM with alternative protein sources is essential, high inclusion levels of alternative ingredients frequently induce metabolic, physiological, and digestive dysfunctions in shrimp. This review systematically evaluates recent scientific advances regarding the nutritional efficacy, physiological limitations, and application potentials of major alternative protein categories to establish sustainable feed formulation strategies for shrimp.
Materials and methods: A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using major scientific databases. Seven alternative protein categories in shrimp feeds were evaluated: plant protein concentrates, insect meals, single-cell proteins (SCPs), terrestrial animal by-products, fishery waste/hydrolysates, microalgae, and macroalgae.
Results and discussion: Each evaluated protein family presented specific advantages and biological bottlenecks:
Plant concentrates and glutens: High protein density, but levels above 15–20% FM replacement trigger gut inflammation and growth retardation due to anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) and essential amino acid deficiencies.
Insect meals and SCPs: Rich in bioactive compounds (taurine, chitin, nucleotides) that enhance immunity and gut microbiota, but inclusion is capped by chitin digestibility, high nucleic acid content, or fatty acid imbalances.
Animal by-products and fishery hydrolysates: Cost-effective and ANF-free; hydrolysates upregulate mTOR signaling and improve palatability, though LC-PUFA deficiencies remain a limiting factor.
Algae: Serve primarily as functional additives boosting antioxidant capacity and immunity rather than primary protein sources. Crucially, no single alternative source can completely replace FM without causing physiological trade-offs.
Conclusions: Relying on a single alternative ingredient for complete fishmeal replacement in shrimp feeds is physiologically unviable due to shared biological bottlenecks, including amino acid imbalances, ANF toxicity, LC-PUFA deficiencies, and reduced palatability. To overcome these metabolic barriers, future aquafeed formulations must integrate three synergistic strategies: (1) advanced biotechnological interventions, such as microbial fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis, to neutralize ANFs and enhance nutrient bioavailability; (2) a multi-protein formulation approach combining plant, terrestrial animal, microbial, and marine waste proteins; and (3) targeted supplementation with functional feed additives (such as crystalline amino acids, bile acids, and immunostimulants) to mitigate lingering metabolic and digestive stress.

Introduction: Selenium is an essential trace element in aquaculture nutrition, playing a pivotal role in antioxidant defense, physiological homeostasis, growth, and immune competence through its integration into selenoproteins and selenoenzymes. Nanoscale selenium (nano-Se, NS) has garnered significant attention as an efficacious feed additive in aquafeeds due to its superior bioavailability, lower toxicity, and enhanced biological activity relative to conventional selenium sources. While numerous studies have documented the effects of nano-Se in various teleost species, empirical data regarding its application in beluga sturgeon (Huso huso), a highly valuable species native to the Caspian Sea, remain scarce. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of dietary nano-Se supplementation at various levels on the growth performance, non-specific immune responses, and hepatic health indicators of juvenile Huso huso.
Materials and Methods: A total of 120 juvenile Huso huso (initial weight: 50.34±1.97 g) were randomly distributed into 12 fiberglass tanks (500 L capacity, 50 cm water depth). The fish were acclimated to the experimental conditions for 7 days using a commercial diet. The feeding trial followed a completely randomized design with four dietary treatments (a control diet (NS0) and diets supplemented with 0.1 (NS0.1), 0.2 (NS0.2), and 0.4 (NS0.4) mg/kg) in triplicate over a 10-week period. Fish were fed to apparent satiation thrice daily (at 08:00, 15:00, and 21:00 h). At the end of the trial, fish were fasted for 48 hours prior to sampling. All fish from each tank were weighed and measured for length. Blood samples were collected from the caudal vein using heparinized syringes after anesthesia, and plasma was separated bycentrifugation and used to determine lysozyme activity, immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels, alternative complement pathway (ACH50) activity, and hepatic enzyme profiles. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan’s multiple range test at a significance level of P<0.05 using SPSS software.
Results and Discussion: Dietary nano-Se supplementation, particularly at 0.2 mg/kg, significantly increased final weight and specific growth rate, while concurrently reducing the feed conversion ratio compared to the control group (P<0.05). This growth enhancement is may be attributed to the regulatory role of selenium in metabolism, its reinforcement of antioxidant defenses, and the upregulation of growth-related gene expression. Regarding immune responses, plasma lysozyme, IgM, and ACH50 activities were significantly elevated in the 0.2 and 0.4 mg/kg nano-Se treatments (P<0.05), indicating a strengthened non-specific humoral barrier in Huso huso. Furthermore, the activities of all measured hepatic enzymes (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase) were significantly reduced in fish fed nano-Se supplemented diets (P<0.05). This decline suggests improved hepatocyte integrity and cell membrane stability, driven by mitigated oxidative stress.
Conclusion: In conclusion, dietary supplementation of nano-Se at 0.2 mg/kg significantly enhances growth performance, improves feed utilization efficiency, boosts non-specific immunity, and promotes hepatic health in juvenile H. huso. Consequently, this level is suggested as an optimal dietary inclusion dose to support overall growth and physiological well-being during juvenile sturgeon rearing.
Conflicts of interest: The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare for the publication of the present work.

Introduction: Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a premier cold-water aquaculture species and a vital source of high-quality protein and long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. As trout farming intensifies, feeding strategies must sustain rapid growth and optimal feed efficiency while safeguarding carcass quality against physiological and environmental stressors. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an indispensable micronutrient for teleosts because they lack L-gulonolactone oxidase, the terminal enzyme required for endogenous ascorbic acid biosynthesis. It plays a critical role in collagen synthesis, skeletal ontogeny, wound healing, and non-specific antioxidant defense; deficiency severely impairs growth and compromises immunocompetence. However, crystalline ascorbic acid exhibits poor stability during feed processing, prolonged storage, and transit through the digestive tract, resulting in diminished bioavailability. Chitosan is a biodegradable, biocompatible, and mucoadhesive biopolymer capable of encapsulating and stabilizing delicate bioactive compounds. Dietary administration of chitosan and its nanoscale derivatives have been shown to enhance growth performance, nutrient utilization, mucosal intestinal integrity, antioxidant status, and systemic immunity in aquatic species. Nanoencapsulation can effectively shield ascorbic acid against oxidative degradation while facilitating controlled gastrointestinal release. Although positive responses to nanochitosan-encapsulated vitamin C have been documented in warm-water species such as Nile tilapia and Pacific white shrimp, empirical evidence in salmonids remains scarce, as previous rainbow trout studies have primarily focused on conventional ascorbic acid or synergistic vitamin C–E regimens. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of graded dietary inclusion levels of nanochitosan-encapsulated vitamin C (NC–VitC) on growth performance, feed utilization, and carcass proximate composition. It was hypothesized that NC–VitC supplementation would non-linearly improve growth and feed conversion efficiency, optimizing carcass quality by promoting protein deposition and attenuating lipid accumulation at intermediate inclusion levels.
Materials and Methods: NC–VitC nanoparticles were synthesized via ionic gelation using low-molecular-weight chitosan, sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP), and L-ascorbic acid. A chitosan solution (2 mg/mL; pH 4.8–5.0) was homogenized with vitamin C and cross-linked with TPP at a 5:1 chitosan: TPP mass ratio. The resulting colloidal suspension was isolated via centrifugation, washed, lyophilized, and comprehensively characterized using DLS, FE-SEM, FTIR, XRD, and EDS. A vitamin C-free basal diet meeting the nutritional requirements of rainbow trout was formulated to contain 0, 25, 50, 100, or 200 mg NC–VitC/kg diet. Juvenile rainbow trout (initial body weight: 30.0 ± 1.0 g) were randomly stocked into 15 fiberglass tanks (300 L; 20 fish/tank; three replicate tanks per dietary treatment). Following a 10-day acclimation period, fish were hand-fed to apparent satiation four times daily for 68 days under controlled rearing conditions (water temperature: 14 ± 1 °C; dissolved oxygen: 7.5 ± 0.3 mg/L; pH 7.2-7.6). Biometric indices, feed utilization parameters, survival, and Fulton’s condition factor were calculated using the tank as the experimental unit. Carcass moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, and ash were determined following standard AOAC protocols. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s post-hoc test (P<0.05) and orthogonal polynomial contrasts (quadratic regression).
Results and Discussion: Physicochemical profiling confirmed the successful synthesis and loading of NC–VitC. Characteristic alterations in FTIR spectra across the O–H/N–H stretching regions, the 1700–1500 /cm band, and the polysaccharide fingerprint confirmed the chemical entrapment of ascorbic acid. XRD spectra exhibited broad, diffuse haloes lacking sharp crystalline reflections, denoting an amorphous dispersion within the polymer matrix. DLS analysis revealed an intensity-weighted hydrodynamic diameter of 6399.8 ± 671.0 nm, whereas FE-SEM depicted discrete primary spherical nanoparticles ranging from 25.79 to 47.09 nm residing within visible clusters. This variance indicates that DLS measured secondary agglomerates in liquid suspension, an expected artifact stemming from the distinct operational principles of dynamic light scattering versus electron microscopy. EDS spectra displayed dominant carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen peaks, confirming an organic, contaminant-free polysaccharide scaffold. Dietary inclusion of NC–VitC significantly influenced final body weight, total weight gain, daily weight gain, SGR, FCR, PER, and condition factor, with no adverse effects on survival across treatments. Final body weight increased from 69.28 g in the unsupplemented control to 80.97 g in the 200 mg/kg group; overall weight gain escalated from 40.26 to 51.65 g, accompanied by an increase in SGR from 1.28% to 1.49%/day. The basal control diet yielded the highest FCR (1.50) and lowest PER (1.48), whereas the most favorable nutrient utilization indices were achieved at 50 and 200 mg/kg. Quadratic regression revealed non-linear plateau responses, predicting an optimum growth response at 150–170 mg NC–VitC/kg diet. This plateau phenomenon is consistent with micronutrient kinetics and tissue saturation profiles in teleosts, corroborating the biostimulatory effects of functional nano-carriers in aquatic feeds. However, because unencapsulated ascorbic acid and bare chitosan controls were not evaluated alongside, the specific carrier effects cannot be fully decoupled from the encapsulation synergy. Carcass moisture and ash contents were unaffected by dietary treatments. Conversely, whole-body crude protein peaked at 100 mg/kg (19.30%), coinciding with a minimum crude lipid level (8.80%), compared with 17.50% protein and 10.30% lipid in the control cohort. Quadratic models estimated optimal carcass composition within the 110–120 mg/kg inclusion range. Similar shifts in carcass composition have been documented following functional feed supplementation, reflecting enhanced nutrient deposition efficiency rather than verified alterations in hepatic lipogenesis. Overall, intermediate supplementation levels provided the optimal physiological balance between growth acceleration and carcass quality.
Conclusion: Dietary supplementation with nanochitosan-encapsulated vitamin C significantly improved somatic growth and feed utilization in juvenile rainbow trout under intensive culture conditions. Relative to the unsupplemented control, NC–VitC elevated final biomass, weight gain, and SGR, while concurrently lowering FCR and enhancing PER. Survival remained exceptionally high across all groups, demonstrating physiological safety. Second-order polynomial regression indicated an optimal dietary inclusion range of 150–170 mg/kg for maximal growth, whereas optimal carcass proximate composition was achieved at a lower threshold (110–120 mg/kg). Although the primary particles were nanoscale, their secondary aggregation in suspension highlights the necessity for advanced dispersion stabilization protocols in feed processing. While NC–VitC represents a potent functional aquafeed additive, parallel validation against free ascorbic acid and blank nanoparticles is recommended prior to commercial application.
